A Student Coalition

Students Against SOB

A student-led network mobilizing campus voices against the Save Our Bacon Act, a provision in the Senate farm bill that would strip states of the right to set their own animal welfare standards. We're connecting students at universities across the country to make sure Senate offices hear from the people who'll inherit this food system.

What's at stake

The Save Our Bacon Act (SOB) is a federal preemption rider being fought over in the Senate farm bill. If passed, it would override state laws that require basic standards for how farm animals are raised, including measures voters in California, Massachusetts, and other states passed at the ballot box.

It also accelerates consolidation in the meat industry. Independent producers lose leverage; the largest packers gain it. The bill nearly passed the House last week and is now in front of the Senate.

Why this lands on Arkansas students

Senator John Boozman chairs the Senate Agriculture Committee, giving him direct influence over whether SOB advances in the Senate. Constituent pressure from farmers, faith leaders, and students in his home state is the most direct path to moving his office.

Students at every Arkansas university have a role here. Animal welfare clubs, sustainability groups, philosophy and ethics societies, faith and creation-care communities, and independent-producer-aligned ag students all have a stake.

Take 90 seconds: Call Boozman's DC office.
"Hi, I'm a student in [state]. I'm asking the Senator to oppose the Save Our Bacon Act in the Senate farm bill. It overrides state animal welfare laws and hurts independent producers. Thank you."
